How to Safely Dispose of Helium Tanks

How to Safely Dispose of Helium Tanks

If you have hosted a party or event, you are probably left to figure out what to do with an empty helium tank. It can be unsafe and is bad for the environment to dispose of helium tanks in the wrong way. We have always been happy to guide our customers on responsible after-use practices, in addition to the balloon decorations.

We now offer a safe and easy to understand step-by-step guide on how to dispose of helium tanks.

Why is Responsible Helium Tank Disposal Important?

Helium tanks are usually made of steel or aluminium and are, more often than not, still pressurised. Not preparing them for disposal can cause injuries and even trouble when it comes to recycling and the environment. By following the correct steps to dispose of your helium tanks, you not only protect the environment but you also comply with local waste disposal laws.

Step 1: Make Sure the Tank Is Completely Empty

Before helium tanks can be disposed of, it is recommended to first check that all the helium is used up.

Attach the nozzle of the tank to the top and push it down. If you do not hear any air and there is no air blowing out, the tank is empty. For safety, you can also leave the tank in this position for several minutes to let any built-up pressure release.

Tip: It is your responsibility to never dispose of a tank that still has gas in it.

Step 2: Remove the Nozzle

Once the tank is fully depleted, cautiously remove the nozzle that is at the top. Most of the time, the nozzle is simply twisted off. However, if there is resistance, slowly turn the pliers.

This is also how recycling facilities attest that the tank has no pressure.

Step 3: Create a Visible Opening in the Tank

Following the removal of the nozzle, to confirm the tank is empty, a visible opening is created.

This is done by using a screwdriver or a metal tool to pierce the top of the tank.

This step guarantees that the container is not reusable and is safe to be handled by employees doing waste and recycling.

Always check that the tank is empty before you pierce it.

Step 4: Mark the Tank as Empty

Take a permanent marker and write the word EMPTY or NO PRESSURE to ensure the tank is marked.

This assists the recycling and sanitation employees to immediately recognise the tank and that it is safe to process.

Step 5: Recycle or Dispose of the Tank Properly

Once you’ve done all that is required, you will be able to dispose of the helium tank, as it has also been prepared to be recycled as scrap metal.

We recommend the following:

  • Taking it to a local scrap metal recycling centre,
  • Dropping it off at a municipal recycling centre,
  • Following Disposal Guidelines from the Environment Agency.
  • Please do NOT place an unprepared helium tank in the regular household waste.
  • Please, NEVER crush, burn, or incinerate a helium tank.
  • Please do NOT leave tanks in hot (or very warm) places.
  • Use gloves to handle or puncture the metal.
  • Please follow the local waste disposal regulations.

FAQ

How can I tell when a helium tank is empty?

To check, attach the nozzle and press it down firmly. If you do not hear any sound or feel any air flowing from the tank, then it is empty. For good measure, leave the valve open for a couple of minutes, and then you can continue to the next steps.

Is it safe to puncture a helium tank?

Yes, it is safe to puncture a helium tank, but only if the tank is completely empty. Having a small, visible hole allows recycling centres to easily see that the tank is not pressurised, but please, do not puncture the tank if there is still helium inside!

What incidents can occur due to the inadequate disposal of a helium tank?

Crushed or heated pressurised tanks can potentially explode, leading to injury of sanitation workers and destruction of machinery. Therefore, the environment and community can be protected through the proper disposal of tanks.

Are the methods for disposal of disposable and refillable helium tanks the same?

Incorrect. After minimal preparation, disposable helium tanks may be recycled; however, reusable tanks are recommended to be returned to the supplier or distributor. When disposing of your tank, ensure you check the label first.
